Naked, anointed with olive oil: this the way in ancient Greece the athletes competed in the Olympics. A practice unthinkable today!
The Romans were the first to consider the oil as essential among gastronomy products, they brought it in all conquered territories and in particular spread olive cultivation throughout Veneto.
With the barbarian invasions, however, production fell and the olive oil became a very precious commodity. To save the olive tree and its magical product, as indeed happened to the vines, were the monks living in the many monasteries scattered between Lake Garda and along the foothills of the Veneto. Today the Garda extra virgin olive oil is a product of excellence in the Veneto and has been awarded the Protected Designation of Origin (P.D.O.) by the European Community.
It is produced on the banks of the three provinces surrounding Lake Garda, but the one produced on the Veronese coast, called Garda Orientale D.o.P., is considered the most valuable. It is a record-breaking oil as it produced in the most northerly latitude in the world, a process made possible thanks to the magnificent micro-climate of Lake Garda.
Enrico Merenda, director of the Tourism Association “Lago di Garda è....”, says: “ it is an oil of great value, light and fruity, rich in chlorophyll, tasty and harmonious to the taste...”
Not to forget other olive-growing regions you can find more oil-proposals in our showcase. |
